If I go into Word for example and click on the 'activate product' option in help nothing happens. Should I get a message saying the product is already activated or similar?

Can't you put the generic product key in your RIS image to for the initial build and then using a Uniqueness Data File which holds computer name and the OEM Product key -Windows XP Home is not being used as a 'server' in any way. If ever you got an OEM product key owned by someone, chances are a lot of people tried to activate this already either by internet or through phone, they willv find out if this VLK keys are being used from a lot of different locations which doesnt makes sense if this VLK is owned by a single company.
